Carolina Ballet 2012-2013 Season

RALEIGH, NC, August 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert Weiss, artistic director and CEO of Carolina Ballet (http://www.carolinaballet.com), has announced the lineup for the company's upcoming 2012-2013 season, including their holiday production of The Nutcracker and a staging of the classic Giselle. Scheduled productions include:

Evening Of Robert Weiss
Featuring Symposium And Intimate Voices (Sept. 13-30, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
To open its 15th anniversary season, Carolina Ballet presents an evening of ballet by Artistic Director Robert Weiss, highlighting several of his performances created especially for the company. The centerpiece is Symposium, based on Plato's dialogue of the same name and choreographed in 2004 to Leonard Bernstein's "Serenade." It was hailed by The News & Observer as "Lovely, moving and perfectly matched to the music." The program will also feature the world premiere of a Weiss original, Intimate Voices.

A Balanchine Celebration
Featuring Who Cares? And Other Favorites (Oct. 11-28, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Not only was George Balanchine the founding artistic director and choreographer of New York City Ballet, he was also an established choreographer on Broadway and in Hollywood. Holding a longstanding personal relationship with composer George Gershwin, Balanchine created Who Cares? as an homage to Gershwin's impressive work.

The Nutcracker (Nov. 23-Dec. 23, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium; Dec. 1-2, UNC Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill; Dec. 29-30, Durham Performing Arts Center)
The magic of Carolina Ballet's The Nutcracker, which premiered to many sold-out performances in 2011, will return to the stage for the 2012 lineup. This year's production also features music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Weiss, with grand-scale illusions created especially for Carolina Ballet that make the performance a truly magical family experience.

Evening Of Lynne Taylor-Corbett
Featuring Mercury, Code Of Silence And Singer Lauren Kennedy In December Songs (Feb. 7-24, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Evening Of Lynne Taylor-Corbett showcases the incredible diversity of human emotion, the unique power of compassion and the anguish and torment associated with lost love. December Songs, featuring Broadway star and Raleigh native Lauren Kennedy singing composer Maury Yeston's beautiful yet sad song cycle, made its musical premiere at the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Hall in 2008. For the first time, Carolina Ballet will present Mercury, set to the music of Joseph Haydn, which made its original debut at New York City Ballet.

The Rite Of Spring (March 7-24, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Well-known Russian composer Igor Stravinsky created The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) for Diaghilev's Ballet Russe in 1913, which was originally choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky. Carolina Ballet celebrates the piece's 100th anniversary with this unique version, which was originally choreographed for Oregon Ballet Theatre in 2009 by Christopher Stowell. Critics have hailed it as "A sleek, sophisticated, thoroughly neo-classic version" of this world-famous ballet.

Fancy Free & Carolina Jamboree (April 18-21, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium; April 26, Durham Performing Arts Center)
Fancy Free, the first ballet choreographed by Jerome Robbins, took New York City by storm, propelled Robbins to a household name and led to a life of work on Broadway, in the movies and in ballet. With music by Leonard Bernstein, Fancy Free was so popular that it became the basis for the movie On The Town with Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. The second half of the show, Carolina Jamboree, will feature choreography by Lynne Taylor-Corbett and music by The Red Clay Ramblers, a Chapel Hill, N.C.-based band. This performance is a special combination of bluegrass and classical ballet that is sure to have guests dancing in the aisles.

Giselle (May 16-19, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium; May 23, Durham Performing Arts Center)
Giselle, the touchstone of ballet for the Romantic era, which made its debut in Paris in 1841, is still being performed by every major ballet company in the world. Carolina Ballet is proud to add Giselle to its repertoire, with amazing sets and costumes imported from Florence, Italy. It features music by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli, with modifications by Weiss, who considers it the ultimate romantic ballet.

Single ticket sales for Raleigh productions will be available on Monday, Aug. 20, with tickets for The Nutcracker available for sale on Monday, Sept. 17. Season to feature two mixed repertory programs including the 80th Anniversary of Kurt Jooss’ The Green Table, works by James Kudelka, Jiří Kylián, Jerome Robbins and Twyla Tharp, a Chicago Premiere by Houston choreographer Stanton Welch, the return of acclaimed story-ballet Othello, and the Silver Anniversary of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker

CHICAGO – Ashley C. Wheater, Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet, announces the company’s 2012-2013 season, launching in the fall with a mixed repertory program featuring James Kudelka’s Pretty BALLET and Jiří Kylián’s Forgotten Land, along with the return of Kurt Jooss’ anti-war masterpiece The Green Table, celebrating its 80th Anniversary, October 17 – 28, 2012. Following will be the 25th Anniversary production of Robert Joffrey’s beloved The Nutcracker, December 7 – 27, 2012. In the New Year, the Joffrey presents a winter mixed repertory program featuring a Chicago Premiere by Stanton Welch and the return of Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs and Jerome Robbins’ Interplay, February 13 – 24, 2013. The season is completed in the spring with the return of Lar Lubovitch’s acclaimed Othello, presented in honor of the choreographer’s 70th birthday, April 24 – May 5, 2013.

Continuing The Joffrey Ballet’s mission to provide the highest level of performance quality, the season will feature live orchestral accompaniment by the Chicago Sinfonietta conducted by Scott Speck, Music Director of The Joffrey Ballet. All performances will take place in the Joffrey’s home venue, the historic Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, in downtown Chicago at 50 East Congress Parkway.

“Recently, the documentary film Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance was released across the United States,” noted Wheater. “Throughout its history, The Joffrey Ballet has celebrated the broad diversity of our art form, embracing the classical and modern, abstract and narrative, traditional and avant-garde. Underlying this eclecticism is a love of excellence, and, always, a deep regard for the human spirit. This exploration continues in 2012-2013, as we present a wide range of work, created new for the Company or drawn from the best of the past.”

The Joffrey’s 2012-2013 season launches with a fall mixed bill of work by three choreographers portraying and exploring their passionate beliefs through dance. James Kudelka’s Pretty BALLET returns to the stage after the Joffrey presented its World Premiere in 2010. Set in four movements to Bohuslav Martinů’s Symphony No. 2, Pretty BALLET creates a pastiche of different moods with small ensembles that continuously shift in organic but unexpected ways. Kudelka’s demanding phrase work and intricate spatial patterns explore the subject of ballet itself as a balance between romantic ideas and industrious principles. Also on the program will be Jiří Kylián’s 1981 work Forgotten Land, not performed by the Joffrey since its Company Premiere in 1985. With music by Benjamin Britten (2013 will be the 100th anniversary of Britten’s birth), this dance was inspired by a painting of women on a beach by the Norwegian Expressionist painter Edvard Munch. With a motif of pulsing, circular movements reminiscent of the waves, the work invokes treasured memories of lost homelands, lost lovers and lost time. The fall program closes with German choreographer Kurt Jooss’ seminal anti-war ballet The Green Table. Originally choreographed in 1932, the Joffrey is proud to present this work in honor of its 80th Anniversary. The Joffrey Ballet was the first American company to dance The Green Table, a Company Premiere in 1967. Subtitled "A Dance of Death in Eight Scenes” and set to music by F.A. Cohen, The Green Table is a commentary on the futility of war and the horrors it causes. The fall program is presented October 17 – 28, 2012.

In 2012 The Joffrey Ballet celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker, Chicago’s most popular holiday tradition and America’s #1 Nutcracker. Originally created in 1987, each year The Nutcracker incorporates the full Joffrey company plus 118 young dancers from the greater Chicagoland area to tell the heart-warming story of Clara and her adventures with the Nutcracker Prince and other enchanted characters. Last year, Joffrey’s Nutcracker was recognized with the Goldstar National Nutcracker Award (affectionately nicknamed “The Nutty”) as the “Best Loved Nutcracker” in the United States. This year Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker is presented in an engagement of 21 performances, December 7 – 27, 2012, with additional Silver Anniversary celebration plans to be announced at a later time.

In the winter of 2013 the Joffrey presents its second mixed repertory program of the season, including Jerome Robbins’ 1945 work Interplay. An energetic, light-hearted and brightly colored ballet with music by Morton Gould, Interplay conveys the wonderful playfulness and unfettered exuberance of children maturing from pre-teens to young adults. Interplay was first performed by the Joffrey in 1972. Also on the lineup is Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs, created following Tharp’s investigation of turn-of-the-century exhibition/ballroom dancing for the 1981 film Ragtime. Each Sinatra song has its own musical and dance-theater character. A wildly popular Tharp classic, Nine Sinatra Songs captures the social dancing of the 1950’s through variously sultry, comic and glamorous vignettes, all costumed by Oscar de la Renta. The winter program is finished off with the Chicago Premiere of a new work by choreographer Stanton Welch, Artistic Director of the Houston Ballet, that will have its World Premiere by The Joffrey at the Jacob’s Pillow Festival in August, 2012. The Joffrey’s winter program runs February 13 – 24, 2013.

In celebration of Lar Lubovitch’s 70th birthday in 2013, the Joffrey’s 2012-2013 season concludes in the spring with the return of the native Chicagoan’s three-act ballet Othello. A Joffrey Premiere in 2009 that garnered unanimous critical acclaim, Lubovitch’s ballet is adapted from three sources: The Moor, a story by Geraldo Cintio in The Hundred Tales, published in Venice in 1566; William Shakespeare’s play Othello, The Moor of Venice, written around 1602; and Guiseppe Verdi’s opera Othello from 1887. Set to music by Elliot B. Goldenthal, Othello uses contemporary ballet and innovative stage design to tell the dramatic story of the Venetian Moor, Othello, his beloved Desdemona and the conniving Iago, who will stop at nothing to usurp Othello’s power. Othello is presented April 24 – May 5, 2013.

Three-program subscriptions, which do not include The Nutcracker, start at $81. Subscriptions will be available for purchase starting February 13, 2012, online at joffrey.org, by mail (Joffrey Ballet Subscriptions, The Joffrey Ballet, Joffrey Tower, 10 East Randolph Street, Chicago, IL 60601), telephone (312) 386-8905, fax (312) 739-0119, or email subscriptions@joffrey.org. Classical Indian dancer Rama Vaidyanathan to kick off the Annenberg Center’s 12/13 Asian Roots series

October 4, 2012

(Philadelphia, October 4, 2012)—The Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts kicks off its acclaimed Asian Roots series with one of the world’s leading classical dancers straight from India, Rama Vaidyanathan. Vaidyanathan is one of the principal interpreters in the ancient Indian dance form of Bharata Natyam, which combines complex footwork, abstract movements and elaborate mime. This performance will take place on Saturday, November 3 at 8 PM. Tickets are $20-$45 (prices are subject to change). For tickets or for more information, please visit AnnenbergCenter.org or call 215.898.3900. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Annenberg Center Box Office.

With “fire power and ebullience, athleticism and rhythmic prowess” (The Hindu), Vaidyanathan’s energetic performance combines exhilarating choreography with the accompanying sounds of live musicians. Led by conductor (“nattuvangam”) Kameswaran Sivakumar, the performance will feature stunning background vocals, the soothing sounds of the violin and percussion from the Indian mridangam.

Renowned as the “thinking dancer,” Vaidyanathan’s distinct performance style blends together tradition and her own unique take on the art of dance. With her extensive experience, Vaidyanathan has mastered the classical dance form of Bharata Natyam, which has been performed in the temples and courts of southern India for centuries. As The New York Times boasts of Vaidyanathan, “The slap of her bare foot on the ground always made a full impact…Her execution was so clear that the fascinations of the Bharatanatyam genre itself were objectively evident.”

A seasoned veteran with “divinity in the flick of a toe” (The Financial Times), Vaidyanathan brings 20 years of expert dance experience to the Annenberg stage. Vaidyanathan’s past performances include an engagement at The World Sanskrit Conference, special charity performances for The Cancer Society and The Red Cross Society as well as an appearance at the opening of the Indian Film Festival in Madrid, Spain in May 2006.

AMERICAN MOVES!
NOBA's 2012-2013 Season of Dance
NEW ORLEANS, LA - The New Orleans Ballet Association announces its 2012-2013 Season of Dance American Moves, celebrating American dance pioneers, visionaries, and legends. This season, five powerhouse companies showcase the unique history, diversity, and innovation of dance in America: the breathtaking physicality of Pilobolus; the sexy dancers of Ballet Hispanico, teaming up with the 19-member, Grammy Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra; the beautiful works of Jessica Lang Dance; the sleek and sharp dancers of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet; and the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company.
The season kicks off with the gravity-defying, shape-shifting dancers of Pilobolus on October 20, 8 pm at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. For over 40 years, Pilobolus has tickled the imagination and entertained the world by blending humor, mind-boggling movement and jaw-dropping athleticism that defies what is humanly possible. With a rich history of sold out performances and in-depth education residencies in New Orleans, this troupe returns for the first time in almost a decade with a fun evening for the entire family.
Continuing our initiative of pairing dance and music, Ballet Hispanico and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra bring a hot, Latin dance party to the Mahalia Jackson Theater on December 8, 7:30 pm. The stage will ignite with the infectious rhythms of Cuban, jazz and big-band music and the stylish Latin social dances of Rumba, Salsa, Cha-cha, and Mambo. The result is a fiery evening that "makes you want to get up and dance" (The New York Times).
NOBA and The NOCCA Institute are pleased to present the New Orleans debut of Jessica Lang Dance at Fred Lupin Memorial Hall on January 18 and 19 at 8 pm and on January 20 at 2 pm. Closing the season on March 23 at the Mahalia Jackson Theater at 8 pm, the Martha Graham Dance Company will perform in New Orleans for the very first time in the company's 87-year history. Hailed as "one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe" (Washington Post), the Martha Graham Dance Company revolutionized American dance. A trailblazing genius, Graham captured the contemporary spirit of her time and created groundbreaking works that continue to inspire and captivate audiences. The New Orleans program is highlighted by Graham's masterpiece Appalachian Spring (1944), set to the famous Aaron Copeland score, and Panorama (1935), danced by New Orleans youth in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the NORDC/NOBA Center For Dance.
NOBA is proud to welcome back two companies who, in the aftermath of Katrina, donated their services to help NOBA bring world renowned dance back to this great city. We honor and pay tribute to the generosity of spirit of Ballet Hispanico and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, which not only constructed special programs to perform at Tulane's Dixon Hall but also conducted workshops in schools throughout the city. In addition to their performances on the Main Stage this season, both companies will again partner with NOBA to provide a week of classes for our youth and families.

Morgan Nardi Choreography (Dusseldorf) A ONE M(ORG)AN SHOW

Presented with the Transatlantique Festival Montreal/Quartiers Danses
A veteran of La La La Human Steps and the legendary Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, French-born Fabien Prioville creates work that bursts with theatricality and striking images. In his new duet (performed with Pascal Merighi, also ex-Tanztheater Wuppertal) Prioville uses Facebook and Skype to invite people to share their music, movement, opinions, even views of their homes, to create a digitally extended live performance, in a witty examination of the impact of new technology on human communication.
Award-winning choreographer Morgan Nardi’s subversive take on the one-man show introduces us to a charming, if not entirely reliable, entertainer who spins fact and fiction to keep us asking who he really is, and why it matters. In an exuberant virtuoso performance fusing dance, song, text and comedy, Nardi questions the self-presentation and authenticity of the artist and the audience, defends the right to lie and shatters the obligation to tell the truth.

These artists are presented through an ongoing exchange partnership between Transatlantique Festival Montreal and The Dance Centre, which since 2008 has facilitated the presentation of BC-based artists at the Festival, and brought artists from the Festival to perform in Vancouver. www.transatlantiquemontreal.com

Thursday-Saturday December 6-8, 8pm Post-show artist talkback December 7

Presented through The Dance Centre’s Artist-in-Residence program
Shay Kuebler presents a new full-length version of his 2011 hit Karoshi (meaning ‘death from overwork’ in Japanese), which is inspired by the clash between extreme societal pressure and personal needs, as exemplified in Japan’s salaryman culture. Kuebler draws on martial arts, hip hop and contemporary dance to create physically explosive, high energy choreography for an outstanding all-male ensemble, incorporating live taiko drumming and video to create a thrilling and visceral theatrical experience. www.shaykuebler.tumblr.com
Jérôme Bel (Paris) Cédric Andrieux
Friday-Sunday January 18-20, 8pm

Presented with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival
The slyly brilliant work of Jérome Bel returns to Vancouver with a beautifully spare and poetic evening of dance and autobiographical storytelling, created in collaboration with, and performed by, French dancer Cédric Andrieux. Reflecting on a rich career which included eight rigorous years with Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Andrieux gives a rare, moving and humorous insider’s view into a dancer's life, performing extracts of work by major choreographers including Cunningham and Trisha Brown. www.jeromebel.fr www.pushfestival.ca
Supported by the Consulate General of France in Vancouver and the Institut français.
Hiroaki Umeda (Tokyo) Haptic + Holistic Strata
Friday-Sunday January 25-27, 8pm

Presented with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival
Hiroaki Umeda is one of Japan’s most exciting artists, bringing together light, sound and movement with astonishing force and style. Haptic plays with the sensation of colour, drenching the stage in layers of red, blue and purple, framing Umeda’s constantly moving body. In Holistic Strata he is bathed in pinpoints of light, swaying with and against a torrential flow of racing light particles, creating an impact that is both disorientating and spellbinding. www.hiroakiumeda.com www.quaternaire.org
www.pushfestival.ca
Supported by the Japan Foundation and the EU Japan Fest.
Pieter Ampe + Guilherme Garrido/CAMPO (Ghent) Still Standing You
Tuesday-Wednesday January 29-30 + Friday-Saturday February 1-2, 8pm

Presented with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival
The incendiary Belgian-Portuguese duo Pieter Ampe and Guilherme Garrido burst on to the European dance scene five years ago and they have toured internationally to wild acclaim ever since. Still Standing You tests the limits of friendship, rivalry and their own bodies in a rough-and-tumble montage of dance, gymnastics and wrestling. Daring, discomfiting and darkly hilarious, this is an astounding take on masculinity, aggression and tenderness. www.campo.nu www.pushfestival.ca
Tour supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
